Welcome to my blog.

After a few random posts I've decided to dedicate this blog to my life long project of Japanese food
and culture (and my life in general, especially my travels).

Since my first taste of sushi back in 1997 I've been interested in, and frequently been making
Japanese food.
My interest in the country and culture started long before and continues to evolve.
I was lucky to finally visit Japan in October 2008, again in November 2019 and hope to be back soon.
In July 2012 I visited Japantown in San Fransisco, the next best thing!
I was lucky to be back in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 thanks to the fact that we now have family living in California.
Both small and big adventures will from now on, as time permits, be shared with you.

I will post other recipes and pictures too, mainly cooking projects, plants and art projects
(including my new love - making kumihimo braided objects).

I hope you'll find it interesting, and feel free to leave a comment or ask questions!

I write mainly in English, but there will be some Norwegian too, especially posts about things
that mainly have Norwegian interest. Tutorials are bi-lingual.

Christmas presents? Julegaver?

The first weekend of December I´m off to a Christmas marked in Ski to sell my jewelry, so I´m going to be producing a lot of items the next 4 weeks. Not everything will be put out on Epla, I´m saving some special pieces for the marked.
I just wanted to remind you to grab the things you are thinking of getting for Christmas before they´re gone! Orders have to be placed in good time too.... I´m happy to send abroad.

Bestillinger må legges inn i god tid før jul, helst før 1. desember!

Best wishes / mvh.

Tutorial: Half flat braid with edge color

Kumihimo tutorial - half flat braid with 8 threads - make a bracelet with edge color

You´ll need for one bracelet: 4 threads in bugtail size, aprox. 75 cm (2,5 feet) long, in two colors.  It fits in 5-6 mm oval endcaps or round endcaps.
You´ll also need: 2 oval endcaps 5-6 mm, one clasp, one pearl on a pin, crystal or charm and 4-5 jumprings 5 mm.

Du ser utstyret på de første bildene.
First two pictures show the equipment.

Disc, a mobile strap I use to secure the threads, satin cord, jumprings, clasp and charms. You´ll also need 2 endcaps.

Her er startoppsettet.
Start setup: Two threads in each direction; north, east, south and west. We will not move the disc for this braid. Edge color: Both upper threads and lower thread right/ left.

Move the first thread: The upper left one goes down to the right of the right threads. From 32 to 10.

Move the second thread: The upper right one goes down to the left of the left threads. From 1 to 23.

Move the third thread: The lower left one goes up to the right of the right threads (east). From 17 to 7.

Move the fourth thread: The lower right one goes up to the left of the left threads (west) . From 16 to 26.

All the threads are now in east and west. Start with the next to upper right thread and move it straight down south. From 8 to 16.

Move the next to upper left thread straight down south. From 25 to 17.

Move the next to lower right thread straight up north. From 9 to 1.

Move the next to lower left thread straight up north. From 24 to 32.

Adjust the right side (east) by moving each thread one notch. From 7 to 8 and from 10 to 9.

Adjust the left side (west) by moving each thread one notch. From 26 to 25 and from 23 to 24.

Vi er tilbake i startposisjon! Repeter til båndet er 15-20 cm langt.
And we´re back in starting position! Repeat until the braid is about 2/3 foot, 15-20 cm.

Under ser du to ferdige armbånd.
Under is an example of two finished bracelets.

Beautiful ceramics...

I was lucky enough to buy not just one, but two, beautiful tea ceremony bowls in Japantown. First I bought this beauty. I wanted a light color since I already got a black one.
It has lovely uneven grey glaze with little dots in it and white pattern that looks like grass or straws.
Then I walked on to the next store and saw this one... oh, and I love blue. So I got this one as well.
It reminds me of the ocean; the Pacific, with the striking color and wave pattern. No regrets, they´re so lovely. If I had a more money, I would get an antique chawan, but I´m happy with these!

I´ve been braiding again....

I must admit that I didn´t braid at all this summer. 6 weeks completely without lifting a cord. It was kinda nice, I didn´t miss the work and strain on my hands/ shoulders, but I missed being creative.

Suddenly I got several custom orders, all in one week, and I "got back on the horse again". I don´t have to tell you I already got all 3 braiding discs going at the same time....
I´ve been ordering new endcaps from www.smyks.dk, they even had square ones... perfect for my square braiding.

It´s very nice to have full size spools of almost every color satin cord. The suitcase was heavy, but it was worth it. I´ve also decided to register my company, so I got my books in order with an organization number and filling in my balance. I´ve ordered new business cards from Moo and a book to do my balance.

So, want to see some new stuff?

Square braid with mousetail, sterling silver details including square endcaps, inner diameter 4,5 mm.

Square braid in forest colors, details in sterling silver coated with 14K gold, large white fresh water pearl.

Back from US!

I hope you are all well! I´ve had an amazing summer, visiting California, Holland and Copenhagen together with Mr. Linuz and mini-me.
We spent 3 weeks in California, mainly in the Bay area. We also made trips to Yosemite, LA, Point Reyes and wine country. More pictures later!

While in San Francisco I visited Japantown.... to get various items and to eat Japanese food off course.
My little girl got a new yukata and a fan, she is so happy!

Not conveyor-belt sushi - sushi on boats in water! I even had toro - it was lovely!

Entrance of Japanese tea garden in Golden gate park.

I haven´t braided in 5 weeks or so, and on returning I got sick and had to spend a week in bed. But last week I got the energy back and started experimenting with some new braids. See the first one under:

I also got 2 custom orders, so I´m buzy this week!

So far in June....

... I´ve been buzy!

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of going to the marketplace in Drøbak, "Torget" (Drøbak is a small town south of Oslo), to sell my kumihimo jewelry and meet other vendors.  I got sunburned and sold some stuff. I also bought this very nice bracelet (or, Mr. Linuz bought it, that is):

It´s a bracelet made in the style used by Vikings, and hand crafted by KarianneG.
Visit her Facebook page for more info: KarianneG on Facebook

I´ve also ordered some more promo-material. These small, but very nice mini-cards come from Moo. They love to print - and it shows! If you would like a 10% discount, send me a message, and I´ll forward you a coupon or a digital link. I get some bonus too, so we both win!

This year, there is no Japanse vegetables in my garden.... so shiso either. Still thinking about growing some though. But, I do have a very nice paprika plant (bell pepper) and some lovely salad! Paprika is not done yet, but I eat fresh salad every day. What a treat!

Do you have anything growing in your garden?

More nice things from MONOme...

I´ve decided to get a pair of earrings for my birthday from MONOme, because I love the pairs I´ve got already soo much. I use my mint green earrings almost every day.

I decided to get these (mini-me helped to pick them):

And since I was customer number 200 in Hilde Irens shop I got to choose a free item...
I got both a necklace and a pair of earrings:

They´re a gift, but to whom is a secret!

Hilde Iren is very nice, so in addition to all the other free things she even made the cutest necklace for my little girl! Here is the happy girl with her new rose necklace:

Look, she pierced her ears!

I´m sorry for few posts in May. It´s been buzy. I´ll be back with more pictures of my garden and braiding soon!

The X-change

Awhile ago I fell in love with some lovely earrings and contacted the shop owner to buy them.
Her response was: I love your bracelets - let´s make a switch! I was so happy!
I already have one par she made, and waited for the parcel eagerly - she didn´t just send me one, but two pairs of earrings!
I think I have worn them every day since I got them, but finally I had the time to take pictures:

 Silver and mint ceramic pearls.

Visit the very talented Hilde-Iren´s shop here to get your own goodies:

And this is her blog:

I wish I wore other rings than my wedding band, because her rings are stunning!

Oxidized silver and red granates.

The bracelet I made for Hilde-Iren in return.

And this is my latest custom order for a friend:
Olive green wrap-around with pearls and crystal.
