Welcome to my blog.

After a few random posts I've decided to dedicate this blog to my life long project of Japanese food
and culture (and my life in general, especially my travels).

Since my first taste of sushi back in 1997 I've been interested in, and frequently been making
Japanese food.
My interest in the country and culture started long before and continues to evolve.
I was lucky to finally visit Japan in October 2008, again in November 2019 and hope to be back soon.
In July 2012 I visited Japantown in San Fransisco, the next best thing!
I was lucky to be back in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 thanks to the fact that we now have family living in California.
Both small and big adventures will from now on, as time permits, be shared with you.

I will post other recipes and pictures too, mainly cooking projects, plants and art projects
(including my new love - making kumihimo braided objects).

I hope you'll find it interesting, and feel free to leave a comment or ask questions!

I write mainly in English, but there will be some Norwegian too, especially posts about things
that mainly have Norwegian interest. Tutorials are bi-lingual.

A few new bracelets to welcome summer!

Finally I had time and energy to sit down and finish two custom orders. Thanks to patient customers.... I hope they will be happy. The sun and a long weekend did me good.

While I was at it, I took out the disc and finished two other braids; One brown silk and one vintage grey silk. I also put together two other bracelets that were ready braided, but not finished.

You´ll find them in the store! These two are already out, the plum, purple and brown ones are coming!

Black brass findings...

I decided to try some new findings this autumn; black brass. I find them at Fallen Angel Brass on Etsy, and they´re casted and finished by hand in the US. They ship fast and the findings are fantastic! They contain no lead, nickel or cadmium, so they´re perfectly safe too.

The store is here: FallenAngelBrass on Etsy

Green silk 16-count braid with black brass tulip endcaps, pinecone charm and green crystal.

I hope my new bracelets do them justice and that the customers will like them... Want to take a peak?

I´ll be making only one piece of each of this, so they´re all OOAK.
They can be ordered directly from me or take a look in the shop; I´ll put them out as I finish and photograph them...

Black silk bracelet with purple and green flowers, calyx endcaps, butterfly charm and green crystal.

What do you think, do you like the darker side of krysantemum design?

New bracelets.

After a long period without braiding (early December until end of January), I decided to experiment with some new designs to get my mojo back.

This is the result; larger stones set in yatsu shippou braid in two or one color. I hope you like them!

Two colors with large unbleached mother-of-pearl nuggets.

One color with lapis lazuli.

I also braided some simple ones in fresh spring colors. I´ll make earrings too, and more pastels and greens I think. What do you think?
Spring is coming!

Baby blue with larger pearl.

Purple with bling.

Note to myself: Time to plant shiso....

Christmas presents? Julegaver?

The first weekend of December I´m off to a Christmas marked in Ski to sell my jewelry, so I´m going to be producing a lot of items the next 4 weeks. Not everything will be put out on Epla, I´m saving some special pieces for the marked.
I just wanted to remind you to grab the things you are thinking of getting for Christmas before they´re gone! Orders have to be placed in good time too.... I´m happy to send abroad.

Bestillinger må legges inn i god tid før jul, helst før 1. desember!

Best wishes / mvh.

I´ve been braiding again....

I must admit that I didn´t braid at all this summer. 6 weeks completely without lifting a cord. It was kinda nice, I didn´t miss the work and strain on my hands/ shoulders, but I missed being creative.

Suddenly I got several custom orders, all in one week, and I "got back on the horse again". I don´t have to tell you I already got all 3 braiding discs going at the same time....
I´ve been ordering new endcaps from www.smyks.dk, they even had square ones... perfect for my square braiding.

It´s very nice to have full size spools of almost every color satin cord. The suitcase was heavy, but it was worth it. I´ve also decided to register my company, so I got my books in order with an organization number and filling in my balance. I´ve ordered new business cards from Moo and a book to do my balance.

So, want to see some new stuff?

Square braid with mousetail, sterling silver details including square endcaps, inner diameter 4,5 mm.

Square braid in forest colors, details in sterling silver coated with 14K gold, large white fresh water pearl.

The X-change

Awhile ago I fell in love with some lovely earrings and contacted the shop owner to buy them.
Her response was: I love your bracelets - let´s make a switch! I was so happy!
I already have one par she made, and waited for the parcel eagerly - she didn´t just send me one, but two pairs of earrings!
I think I have worn them every day since I got them, but finally I had the time to take pictures:

 Silver and mint ceramic pearls.

Visit the very talented Hilde-Iren´s shop here to get your own goodies:
MonoMe on Epla

And this is her blog:
http://www.monome-me.blogspot.com/
I wish I wore other rings than my wedding band, because her rings are stunning!

Oxidized silver and red granates.

The bracelet I made for Hilde-Iren in return.

And this is my latest custom order for a friend:
Olive green wrap-around with pearls and crystal.

Vintage silk made into a new bracelet

I´ve had this vintage victorian silk for a while, making some attempts to braid with it, but it was difficult. But after making my thin wrap-arounds with silver details, I thought I´d try to make one with the vintage silk too.
It worked out great! I´m not sure I want to part with it, so it sits in my workroom for now. The pictures can´t show the light, silky, matt texture, but you can imagine it?
I´ve finished it with silver and copper enamel jump rings, violet Swarovski and fresh water pearls.

Color is called "plum". It´s laying on top of the empty quills that contained the silk thread.
It says "Patented 1870", so I guess the silk is produced between 1870 and 1920.

New store and my submissions to craftgawker

I´ve been busy lately, braiding until my hands are sore and also finding time to explore new venues online... well, not really, I don´t have the time, but I use the late evenings and nights...

I´ve submitted 2 tutorials to www.craftgawker.com that has been accepted. Lots of page views on my blog was the result. And I´m a little bit proud... :) Click on the green craftgawker-logo one the right side to get to my gallery.

Soooo many hearts! :)

I´ve also opened a second online store on Pipler.com. They make it easy also for sales abroad, so I thought it might be a good idea to get more international customers. Etsy is nice, but big and a little bit frightening, so I thought Pipler might be a nice starting point. Epla is still the bulk of my Norwegian customers, but we´ll see how things develop.

Check out my store, will you? http://www.pipler.com/shop/krysantemum-design.html

My storefront!

Oh, and there has been a lot of orders from friends... these thin wrap-around-the-vrist style bracelets are a hit! Plus the spiral bracelets for little girls birthdays...

Wrap around bracelets. I also make anklets in the same style.

More custom orders

I´ve been getting several custom orders lately, so I´ve been braiding a lot.
Two child bracelets were rush orders for a birthday party, so I didn´t even have time to take pictures of them! I´m planning to make more of them, they are popular birthday gifts for litle girls.

This is a foot chain in thin braid with sterling silver details. I hope the owner will wear it a lot this summer!

A friend wanted a thin, long bracelet to wrap twice around her vrist. I´m planning to make a variety of this, even longer, to wrap 3 times around and it can double as both a foot bracelet (two times around) or necklace.

This is a necklace made for someone who loved the bracelet I´ve made in this color/ pattern, but never uses bracelets. She wanted the 16 thread braid for a short chocker-style necklace instead.

Håndlaga 2012

omtanke inn i sine håndlagde produkter.

Winter creativity

Custom flower bracelet with sterling silver details.

So I had the pleasure of braiding 2 custom orders this week.
One bracelet with flowers in strong colors and one necklace in soft lilac with dark lilac trim.

I´ve also been inspired by the cold winter weather, braiding in light, soft colors like white, aqua and mint.

Light winter colors. From left: Two shades of white (bracelet in 16-count braid with sterling silver details), aqua/offwhite bracelet, half made, and mint satin mousetail for the next project.
(Mint is the "hottest" color this season, I´ve heard.)

Custom necklace in two different techniques;  hollow braid with the trim color as a core and spiral braid with 12 threads.

Lilac necklace with sterling silver details and Swarovski crystal.

Kumihimo tutorial - square braid - firkantfletting

Kumihimo firkantfletting med 8 tråder
Kumihimo tutorial - square braid with 8 threads

Tykkelsen passet i 8 mm endestykker.
You´ll need for one bracelet: 4 threads in your chosen size, aprox. 75 cm (2,5 feet) long, in one, two or four colors. The instructions show a two color braid with symmetric positions that gives a striped pattern. I´ve used 2,2 mm satin cord, "rattail". It fits in 8 mm endcaps.

Set up your braid as you would for the basic 8-strand. (In start position the upper and lower threads won´t be crosses like in the picture, that happens after you braided one round.)

Startoppsett.
Start position.

Move thread 1 to 7 (upper right thread down to the two threads to the right).

Move thread from 17 to 23 (lower left thread up to the two threads on the left).

Move thread from 24 to 1 (mid left thread crosses the thread on top).

Flytt tråd fra 8 til 17 (midterste høyre tråd krysser over tråden nederst).
Move thread from 8 to 17 (mid right thread crosses the thread down).

Move thread rom 32 to 26 (upper left thread out to left side).

Move thread from 16 to 10 (lower right thread out to right side).

Move thread from 9 to 32 (mid right thread crosses over top thread).

Flytt tråd fra 25 til 16 (midterste venstre tråd krysser over tråden nederst).
Move thread from 25 to 16 (mid left thread crosses over down thread).

Adjust threads on left and right side one notch down and up to reach start position.

Repeat until the braid is long enough for a bracelet or other desired jewelry.

Resultatet!
Lykke til......
The result! Good luck....
